Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, played by Liam Neeson, is known to be a maverick Jedi throughout the Star Wars universe. His versatility and open-mindedness have made him one of the most beloved characters in the entire Star Wars saga. His commitment to the Jedi cause and belief in always doing the right thing have been inspiring audiences for decades.
Early Life and Upbringing
Qui-Gon was born on the galactic capital of Coruscant. At an early age, he was taken to the Jedi Temple to be trained as a Jedi and was assigned to the Heliost Clan to be trained as a youngling under Jedi Master Tera Sinube.
Dooku’s Apprentice
Jinn, at the age of twelve, becomes Jedi Master Count Dooku’s padawan. Under his mentorship, Qui-Gon furthered his knowledge of the ways of the Force. In his initial meeting with Count Dooku, Jinn admits to his master that he is frightened of not being worthy of being a Jedi. To which his master praises him for his honesty and self-knowledge. While being Dooku’s apprentice, Obi-Wan went on many missions with his master, like rescuing Senator Dagonet’s son.
Training Obi-Wan Kenobi as his Padawan

Jinn becomes a Jedi Master after completing his training, but he is quite different from other Jedi. Throughout the Galaxy, Qui-Gon is known to be a maverick Jedi because of his independent attitude towards the Jedi Order, as he disobeys it if he feels that it is the right decision. Jinn eventually takes Obi-Wan Kenobi as his padawan learner. But, despite their initial differences, they make a great team and often go on important missions together, like the mission to Pijal.
The Conflict That Shaped a Galaxy
After the Trade Federation blockades Naboo, the Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum sends Qui-Gon and his apprentice Obi-Wan to Naboo as ambassadors to negotiate with the Federation. However, after arriving, Viceroy Nute Gunray tries to kill both of them, but they are able to escape; before leaving the ship, they realize the real intention of the Trade Federation is to use the blockade as an excuse to take control of Naboo. Furthermore, their battle droids are ready to attack Naboo.
Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan quickly go to Naboo to see the situation. After landing, they realize the Trade Federation has deployed battle droids. They have taken control of the capital city, Theed. They find Queen Amidala and her entourage captured and surrounded by battle droids. After saving them and fighting the battle droids, they all escape Naboo in the queen’s starship. But the ship’s hyperdrive generator gets damaged by the Federation ships’ attack, and they have to make an emergency landing on Tatooine.
Discovery of Anakin Skywalker

Qui-Gon is a firm believer in the Living Force, and this belief led to one of the most important discoveries of his life: the discovery of the Chosen One, which changes the fate of everyone in the Galaxy. On Tatooine, while looking for a piece that can fix the ship, Qui-Gon, along with Padmé and Jar Jar Binks, lands on Watto’s second-hand goods shop, where Anakin Skywalker works.
Anakin quickly impresses Qui-Gon with his kindness and brilliant skills. Which made the Jedi Master feel that there is something special about the little boy. After spending some more time with him and testing his blood, Qui-Gon believes Anakin is the chosen one and decides to take him to Coruscant.
On Coruscant, the members of the Jedi High Council, especially Yoda, does not share the same views about Anakin as Qui-Gon and refuse to train him. However, the Jedi Master remains firm in his belief and decides to take Anakin as his padawan, going against the Jedi Council.
Death
Qui-Gon, along with Obi-Wan, Queen Amidala, Panaka, and the Gungan army, attacks Theed to take back its palace’s control. In the hangar, the Jedi, Kenobi, and Jinn are confronted by Sith Lord Darth Maul, and they duel. While dueling, the two Jedi get separated by Maul as he traps Obi-Wan behind a shield, leaving the Jedi Master to fight the Sith Lord on his own. Now Qui-Gon and Darth Maul duel fiercely, defending each attack. However, Maul eventually catches Jinn off guard by striking him with his lightsaber hilt, causing him to lose his balance. Taking this opportunity, the Sith Lord attacks the Jedi Master by striking through his torso. Seeing his master die, Obi-Wan angrily attacks Darth Maul and kills him. After killing the Sith Lord, the Jedi runs toward his master, and while Qui-Gon takes his last breath, he requests Obi-Wan to train Anakin so he can fulfill the prophecy.
Post-Death Legacy
Even after Qui-Gon’s death, his impact is profound on the Jedi Order and the entire Galaxy. Qui-Gon is the first Jedi to be able to become part of the Force after dying. After him, many Jedi follow in his footsteps, using this as a way to guide the future generation of the Jedi. Furthermore, Qui-Gon’s teachings about following the will of the Force also greatly impacted the Galaxy. The Jedi who survived the purge used his teachings to rebuild the Jedi Order in the Galaxy.
Qui-Gon’s Lightsaber Color
The Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn constructed a green lightsaber, which is associated with Consulars who focus more on the Force rather than combat. The saber fitted perfectly with Qui-Gon’s wise and philosophical personality.
