He first appears when Jar Jar Binks returns to Otoh Gunga with Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, seeking assistance from the Gungans in the looming invasion by the Trade Federation. Tarpals was initially skeptical of Jar Jar, especially given the latter’s reputation for clumsiness and incompetence.
Tarpals’ interactions with Jar Jar Binks provided some comedic relief in the film, but they also highlighted his no-nonsense attitude. Even though Tarpals was annoyed by Jar Jar’s antics, he still showed a sense of camaraderie and care for his fellow Gungan. This was evident when he playfully teased Jar Jar while also keeping him in line. As a commanding officer, Tarpals represented the disciplined and serious side of Gungan life, contrasting with Jar Jar’s more chaotic nature.
Tarpals played a crucial role in the Gungan-Naboo alliance. Although the Gungans and Naboo were historically distrustful of each other, the threat posed by the Trade Federation forced the two societies to unite. Tarpals and his troops, equipped with energy shields and powerful boomas (energy grenades), fought valiantly against the seemingly endless waves of battle droids.

Tarpals’ Heroic Sacrifice
Captain Tarpals’ story didn’t end with The Phantom Menace. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Tarpals returned for an even more heroic and tragic role. During the series, the Gungan captain once again found himself in a critical position, this time defending his people against a much larger threat: General Grievous, the infamous Separatist leader and Jedi killer.
In The Clone Wars, the people of Naboo are threatened when General Grievous leads a Separatist attack. Tarpals, recognizing the danger Grievous posed, leads a Gungan task force to capture the cyborg general. In one of the most emotionally charged scenes of the series, Tarpals confronts Grievous head-on. The Gungan warrior fights valiantly, knowing full well that Grievous is a far more dangerous opponent than any droid army.
During the battle, Tarpals manages to impale Grievous with a spear, but in doing so, he sacrifices his own life. Grievous mortally wounds Tarpals, yet the Gungan’s brave actions buy his people enough time to capture the dreaded general. This sacrifice made Tarpals an unsung hero of Star Wars. His brief appearance had a lasting impact on the fight against the Separatists.
