Admiral Gial Ackbar, played by Tim Rose (puppetry) and voiced by Erik Bauersfeld, was a Mon Calamari naval strategist. His tactical brilliance helped the Rebel Alliance win crucial battles. In contrast, Mon Mothma, portrayed by Caroline Blakiston, was a calm and determined senator from Chandrila. She served as the political architect of the Rebellion, uniting systems to resist Imperial oppression.
Together, they were more than leaders—they were the minds and spirit of the Rebellion. Mon Mothma built a government to replace the Empire. Ackbar made sure the Rebel fleet remained strong against the Imperial war machine. Their joint leadership was not only about winning a war; it was about shaping the galaxy’s future.
This is the story of Gial Ackbar and Mon Mothma. Their partnership forged the Rebellion, led it to victory, and laid the groundwork for the New Republic.
The Rise of Two Leaders from Opposing Worlds
Before joining the Rebel Alliance, Ackbar and Mon Mothma had very different backgrounds. Ackbar was a naval officer from Mon Cala, a peaceful ocean world famous for shipbuilding. When the Empire enslaved his people and took their fleets, he was captured and made a military advisor to Grand Moff Tarkin. He was later freed by the Rebellion. From that point on, he vowed to fight against Imperial tyranny.
Mon Mothma was a Chandrilan senator in the Imperial Senate. She once thought reform could happen through diplomacy. After seeing the massacre at Ghorman, ordered by Emperor Palpatine, she understood that peace under Imperial rule was an illusion. Defying the Emperor, she publicly condemned his reign and went into hiding. She became the figurehead of the Rebel Alliance.
Though their paths seemed different—one a military tactician and the other a political visionary—the war united them for a shared mission.
Forging the Rebel Alliance
The Rebellion started as scattered resistance groups. Mon Mothma officially united them into a single fighting force. After her powerful speech against Emperor Palpatine, she escaped to the secret Rebel base. There, she formally declared the formation of the Rebel Alliance.
But a rebellion needed more than words; it needed a fleet to challenge the Imperial Navy. This is where Ackbar’s leadership proved crucial.
The Mon Calamari, having suffered under Imperial rule, joined the Rebellion fully. They converted their star cruisers into warships, giving the Rebel fleet the capital ships it urgently required. Under Ackbar’s command, these vessels became the backbone of the Rebellion’s naval strength.
From this moment on, Mon Mothma and Ackbar worked as a team—one leading the war effort from the command bridge, the other from the political front lines.
The Battle of Endor: Their Defining Moment
The ultimate test of their leadership happened at the Battle of Endor. Mon Mothma saw a chance to strike a serious blow to the Empire. She approved the bold plan to attack the second Death Star and put Ackbar in charge of the Rebel fleet for the largest battle in the Galactic Civil War.
When the Rebels arrived at Endor, they faced a shocking truth—the battle station was fully operational, and the Imperial fleet was ready. As the Death Star’s superlaser destroyed Mon Calamari cruisers, Ackbar had a tough decision—fight a likely losing battle or call for a full retreat.
Only after Han Solo and Leia Organa’s ground forces disabled the Death Star’s shield generator did Ackbar see his chance. In one of the most famous moments in Star Wars history, he gave the order:
“Concentrate all firepower on that Super Star Destroyer.”
His command destroyed the Executor, Darth Vader’s flagship. This opened the path for Lando Calrissian and Wedge Antilles to destroy the Death Star from within. The battle ended with Emperor Palpatine dead, Darth Vader redeemed, and the Empire in shambles. Victory belonged to the Rebellion.
The Birth of the New Republic
With the Empire fractured, Mon Mothma and Ackbar turned to the next challenge—rebuilding the galaxy. Mon Mothma became the New Republic’s first Chancellor. She aimed to build a government that would stop any future dictatorship like Palpatine’s. She moved the Republic’s capital to Chandrila, enacted sweeping democratic reforms, and ensured that power was never concentrated in a single leader.
Ackbar, meanwhile, was promoted to Supreme Commander of the New Republic Defense Fleet. He led the final push against Imperial remnants, culminating in the Battle of Jakku—the last major conflict of the Galactic Civil War. With the Empire defeated, he helped oversee the transition of the Rebel fleet into a peacekeeping force, rather than a permanent war machine. For a time, their vision of peace seemed to be within reach.
The Rising Shadows and Their Legacy
Mon Mothma, despite her leadership, grew tired of war. She wanted a future free from endless conflict. So, she started a big demilitarization effort. She believed the Republic should not rely on military power. Ackbar, loyal to the Chancellor, worried that a weaker fleet would leave the galaxy open to threats. Sadly, he was correct.
As Mon Mothma’s health faded, she left politics. Meanwhile, the First Order rose in secret. When the Republic did nothing, Leia Organa took Ackbar’s path. She formed the Resistance to prepare for the coming war. Ackbar returned to the fight, joining the Resistance. That year, the First Order launched a surprise attack on Hosnian Prime. In the battle that followed, Ackbar was killed. He left behind a legacy of military brilliance.
Though both leaders had passed, their impact on the galaxy remained. Without Mon Mothma’s leadership, the Rebellion would never have become strong enough to challenge the Empire. Without Ackbar’s tactical genius, they never would have won. Their leadership transformed galactic history. They showed that victory comes from strategy, courage, and unity, not just power.
