The Rebel Alliance was built on hope, but hope alone was not enough to defeat the Empire. It took the combined efforts of warriors, strategists, and leaders who stood against overwhelming odds. Among them were two figures who played vastly different but equally crucial roles—Luke Skywalker, the Jedi Knight who brought balance to the Force, and Gial Ackbar, the brilliant admiral who led the Rebellion’s fleet to victory.
Portrayed by Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker started as a young farm boy on Tatooine but became the last hope of the Jedi, facing Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine in the final moments. Meanwhile, Gial Ackbar, voiced by Erik Bauersfeld, was one of the greatest military minds in the Rebel Alliance, orchestrating the space battles that turned the tide against the Empire.
Though they fought on different fronts, their alliance was instrumental in bringing down the Emperor’s reign and shaping the future of the galaxy.
Rebellion’s Growing Strength and Their Indirect Connection

Luke Skywalker first emerged as a hero after the Battle of Yavin, where he destroyed the first Death Star with the help of Han Solo and Princess Leia. This victory gave the Rebellion new life, proving that the Empire was not invincible.
Meanwhile, Gial Ackbar, a respected leader of the Mon Calamari, was strengthening the Rebel fleet. His people, known for their advanced starship technology, had already suffered under the Empire’s rule. Determined to fight back, Ackbar committed Mon Calamari warships to the Rebellion, including the MC80 Star Cruisers, which became the backbone of the Rebel fleet.
As Luke trained as a Jedi with Yoda, Ackbar quietly planned military strategies. These plans would later help in the final battle against the Empire.
The Battle of Endor: A Turning Point
The defining moment of Gial Ackbar and Luke Skywalker’s alliance came at the Battle of Endor. While Luke faced Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader, Ackbar led the Rebel fleet in an all-out assault against the second Death Star.
Ackbar commanded the fleet from his flagship, the Home One, directing attacks against the Imperial armada. The battle took a sudden turn when the Rebels realized the Death Star was operational. As the space station fired upon the fleet, Ackbar famously declared, “It’s a trap!” signaling the urgency of the situation.
Despite the overwhelming firepower of the Imperial forces, Ackbar refused to retreat. He adjusted tactics, ordering the Rebel fleet to engage the Star Destroyers at close range to even the odds. Meanwhile, on the Death Star, Luke Skywalker was locked in a deadly confrontation with Darth Vader. When he resisted the dark side, Vader turned on Emperor Palpatine. He destroyed him and redeemed Anakin Skywalker.
With the Death Star’s shields down, due to Han, Leia, and the ground team, Ackbar ordered Lando Calrissian and Wedge Antilles to lead the final attack. The destruction of the Death Star marked the beginning of the Empire’s collapse.
The Fight Didn’t End With Endor

After the Emperor died, the Empire didn’t fall right away. Luke Skywalker worked on rebuilding the Jedi Order. Meanwhile, Gial Ackbar focused on dismantling the remaining Imperial forces.
Ackbar, as Supreme Commander of the New Republic Defense Fleet, led the military in key battles. One of these was the Battle of Jakku. At Jakku, they finally defeated the last major Imperial remnants. His leadership ensured that the Republic secured its place as the new ruling government of the galaxy.
Luke, meanwhile, traveled the galaxy in search of Jedi knowledge, hoping to rebuild what was lost. Though their missions had taken them in different directions, both Luke and Ackbar remained symbols of the Rebellion’s victory and the hope for a better future.
A Legacy That Endured
The alliance between Gial Ackbar and Luke Skywalker was one of strategy and faith. Ackbar led fleets, while Luke led a spiritual battle against the darkness. Together, they proved that the fight against tyranny required both strength and wisdom.
Years later, when the First Order emerged, both Ackbar and Luke were drawn back into the fight. Ackbar continued serving as a key military leader until he was tragically lost during the Resistance’s escape from D’Qar. Luke, after years in exile, returned to inspire the next generation of heroes.
Though both were gone by the time of the Resistance’s final battle against the First Order, their impact on the galaxy remained. Without Gial Ackbar and Luke Skywalker, the Empire might have never fallen, and the hope of the Jedi might have been lost forever.
